I am not sure....but I think Italians have a love affair with cats. They are everywhere.....and at the same time it does not look like anyone owns them. In the streets, in hotel lobbies and in restaurants. I thought it strange the first time I had a cat brush up against me in a restaurant.....OK, but when I was the only one at breakfast and there was 7....really? I also know why the cats like the Italians....they feed them. In the 7 cat restaurant, the cats lost interest in me immediately when the server came out and feed them prosciutto.
