Everything I have heard or read about driving in Italy gave you one tip about driving in Italy…..don’t. I would agree except for in Sicily. In the rest of Italy the train system does the trick for the most part.
So we rent a car….first it was cheap. $56 bucks for the week….ok, by the time we left it was $90 on account of the idiot girl at the counter. I needed a GPS and had ordered a GPS, but these facts eluded her in her quest for a bad customer service experince.
I found driving in Italy fine…..Denise thought the round abouts were a little crazy...I did not. One of the reasons I felt at ease is the speed. Outside of the highways, Italians drive slow….30-40 Kilometers...I’m not sure what that is...but it must be like 20-30 mphs. The main reason? Well you could start with the cars….Italy, although makes some of the best race cars in the world….has crappy little cars. The Renault I rented was so underpowered that I almost had to push it. The real reason are the roads….or should we say large sidewalks; add tons of people who could care less if you hit them….add in the vendors who are in the street and lastly people parking every where….you can’t go fast.
The really strange thing in the towns I drove was the lack of any type of signs. No stop signs, no lights, no yield, no speed…..basically the italians know the rules of the road and mainly followed them.
Returned that little car without a dent or scratch. I was glad to get back to public transportation.
